Gustavo started his Art studies at the Museo de Bellas Artes in Santiago, Chile, in 1976. He graduated from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago  in 1985. He had various teachers and influences such as Miguel Venegas Cifuentes in his early years (teacher of Claudio Bravo), the Renascent Masters, to later on influenced by Claudio Bravo, Chuck Close, Richard Estes works among others, which allowed him to develop his own methods for realism in oil painting.

After working as an Illustrator and Art Director, he earned awards in his native country to then moving to New York City in 1990 where he did several art related jobs and continuing showing his work through group and solo exhibitions in several cities of United States as well as North, Central and South America.

He was awarded the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant and recently awarded First Prize, a Solo Show and Representation, at an International Competition of Dacia Gallery in New York City in 2014 among others. He presently lives and works in New York City.
